Painting allows me to say things that are beautiful, exciting, complex, angry, mean, ugly and anything else I want to represent without my having to worry about whether it offends someone. I find too many people paint with the idea of impressing an audience or finding a buyer, or making their clients happy with their direction and this leads to boring and predictable art. It is not my job as an artist to make people like my art but rather it is my job to paint and let the viewer determine for themselves whether they get it or want to get it.
