In The Studio: Watercolor Demonstrations

The Artist In The Studio

Over the next several days I am going to be posting some of my more recent watercolor demonstrations.  These were all painted for a group of my students and the sole purpose of each piece is to explain of provide direction for a lesson.  They are finished just enough to get the point of the class across and they were not painted with the intention of finishing to the level of a potential sale.  Usually they are completed in 45 minutes and for me that gives me just enough time to not mess it up.Seward12×16 watercolor on 300lb arches paper “Seward, Alaska”  The point of this painting was to try to use overlapping shapes and a range of grays to create a nice feeling of distance.  Also I was trying to get across the sense of being in the dark shadow of the rocks on the left.  The light on the tops of the rocks and the swirling whites in the water give a nice sense of light and sun.Maintenance Barns12×16 watercolor on 300lb arches paper “Sky Meadows Maintenance” this painting is all about the use of shadows and darks to move the viewer into the painting.  I have crafted a fairly nice shape using the white paper to move back into the painting.  The big tree on the right serves to direct the viewer down into the collection of buildings which comprise the center of interest.

  1. Great explanation of the different objectives in both paintings to understand the movement, the sensation of depth, the feeling of chiaroscuro, the use of white paper, forms and darks to move and direct the viewer and so on. It is a pleasure for me to read your informative texts. Thank you Steve, you are besides a great painter, a great teacher.
