The Artist In The Studio

This paintings is a nice winter grey scene with lots of expressive foreground, drybrush and detail brushwork.  I hope you enjoy it.  In this painting I have pushed the primary shapes trees, rocks, buildings very high on the horizon.  The palette I am using is pretty greyed but for what I am try to capture it is pretty colorful.  I have also really pushed the dark trees dark and gotten a lot of mileage out of the rigger and my wonderful knife to paint and express the trees and weeds.

Using a mix of olive green, cobalt blue, ultramarine violet, and burnt sienna I painted the sky, immediately using very little water paint the trees with a very dark green brown mixture, try to keep this varied or it will become very flat.

Using a large round brush and a mixture of raw sienna, olive green and burnt sienna, occasionally adding new gamboge and cobalt blue paint the foreground with very broad bold strokes leaving random yet interesting pieces of white paper that create movement across the painting.

Scrape some tree marks out of the tree form and then put in details in the foreground with a really small liner brush.  Make these dark and crisp.  Also add some extra dark passages on the field to get the feeling of depth and form.

Paint the buildings and roof tops, plus put a cool green wash over the rock, make sure you keep these washes light. Do some more scraping and details in the foreground this is a very important piece of the painting.  Don’t go crazy but be discreet and yet expressive.

Dark accents and details on the building for shadows, doors and windows.

Fine details in the woods, using a liner or a rigger, and some finish details on buildings and in the foreground.  Enjoy the process, sometimes it is fun to be a little more deliberate and detail oriented but remember the details comes from and after the major forms are established.
