In The Studio: Just Paint “Sun on the Pathway”

The Artist In The Studio

In this lesson, which is similar to the last demonstration, except that I tried to slow the movement down by introducing trees, weeds and breaks in the white shape.  By putting obstacles and an a variety of textures along the edges of the white shape I have created interesting information which keeps the viewer from getting to the center of interest too fast.

DSC_0008After doing a nice contour shape drawing I ran an interesting blue sky leaving light pieces which will help to justify all of the white paper in the front of the painting.  Without letting the sky dry I laid in a bright green tree color cutting around the tops of the buildings.  Try not to get too concerned if you loose a few edges, they can be reclaimed with careful lifts.DSC_0009Using a number 16 round brush and really using the side of my brush I began the fall foliage colors around the house, using raw sienna, cadmium red, new gamboge and hansa yellow.  Leave lots of white paper to make the colors really pop and add a crisp contrast between the values shapes.DSC_0015I finished off the foreground leaving lots of white paper and really emphasizing my brushwork to create visual interest without being overly concerned with details.DSC_0021Dark accents and a few select details and the painting will come together.  DSC_0023detail of the right side of the painting notice how the colors really merge inside the shadows.DSC_0022detail of the left of the painting, I used just a few pieces of dark details to indicate the trees and the form inside the shadows.
