Workshops: Rockport, Maine Day 10 “Rockport Harbor”

Workshops

Today when we arrived at the harbor it was socked in with fog, everything vanished into the beautiful grey of fog.  I waited until the fog lifted and a few boats appeared and I painted this scene as quickly as possible.  By the time I had finished the sky was blue and it was a crystal clear sparkly Maine day.  What a wonderful place to paint.  The grey I used was burnt sienna and ultramarine blue with a hint of raw sienna in the upper part of the sky.   This gives the impression of light filtering through the fog.  DSC_0005I love the scene looking across the canal and up the hill into Rockport Village.  I made sure that I used the path to lead into the village without it being too much of a contrivance.  I was most taken by the lovely green trees and how they highlighted the roofs and porches of the building.  I really tried to keep this painting simple although it does seem to have an overly complicated feeling.  It was mighty busy and I think I toned it down a lot.

  1. I love EVERYTHING about the top painting — the light coming through the fog, the swirl of the water, the boats…what a beautiful watercolor!
