Workshops

Glorious day perfect sky, low 60’s and this wonderful little lighthouse that is only to be viewed from my friend Dell’s secret hiding place.  Actually it is totally public but I had never been there before.  I composed my demo by bringing everything close to the front and building the rocks up to create a triangular piece of movement into the painting.  The focus of the painting is to capture the light on the building and to carry the feeling of light throughout the rest of the painting.  I used white paper and lots of vibrant colors to say light.Lots of white paper and yellows to get the warmth of the morning light.  The dry brush on the edges of the rocks and trees helps to say light, remember your brushwork always is the name of the game in watercolor.  Composition, drawing, brushwork, color, and application of paint those are the five keys to good outdoor painting. My view for the painting, I really thought that the water needed to be reduced and the rocks on the right had to be moved into the painting. All day long I had been staring at theses rocks and trees and just had to paint them.  I do like the way this painting turned out.  It really is a matter of focusing on the main thing and painting that.  Rocks, trees, and water and leave out the light house which really is not a normal piece of subject matter for me but trees and rocks my favorite.
