In The Studio: Just Paint 54 “Sunset on Westkeig”

The Artist In The Studio

This is a slightly tricky painting because the paint is applied in sequential washes or in other words you try not to let the washes dry between applications.  This is not glazing wet washes over dry washes.  Use a larger round or flat and keep the paint flowing.  I will try to do a few more of these to help you with the process because it is a great way to get wonderful colors and exciting accidents in the painting.  The green color is not an applied green but the blue from the sky running down on to the yellow field.

Alizirin sky leaving an interesting white dry passage for the clouds.Cobalt blue mixed with ultramarine blue floated right over top of the red sky ***alert*** don’t rub the paint.

Hansa Yellow mixed with New Gamboge for the field leave some dry textured areas for variety in the next wash.

Alizirin Crimson over top of the yellow again leaving some highlights or lighter areas.

Pure pieces of cadmium scarlet on top of the red for a blazing sun effect.

More blue over the yellow creating a wonderful subdued green color.  Give this a try and be light with the brush and use less water each successive wash.  It will come to you if you practice it.

  1. Steve, this is such a great variation of your previous painting. Tricky technique but a fabulous sky!
