The Artist In The Studio

The following images are by Colleen Sabo and Kristin Herzog two wonderfully talented masters in the use of opaque watercolor.  Both of them have been very successful in national juried shows their work has been appreciated by jurors of quality.Colleen Sabo “Chesapeake”Kristin Herzog “Letters Home II”

Yesterday I posted on my blog an opaque watercolor that from an instructional perspective was adequate. But I think if you are interested in seeing better examples of how to really get the most out of using watercolor in a very colorful and abstract fashion then today’s post should be perfect for you.  Remember watercolor doesn’t have to be applied in a transparent way, it works just exceptionally when applied in a dense opaque way.  Colors are more vibrant and the results as you will see are quite stunning.  The biases towards the exclusive use of transparent watercolor have held back the evolution of the medium.  These two painters I am posting are both, for lack of a better term, students of mine but they are so past needing me to help them that I cringe at that description.  They are both friends and extremely accomplished painters who I am blessed to have in the circle of artist who visit me weekly and enrich my creative life.  You should search out their work and follow their progress.Colleen Sabo “livia”Kristin Herzog “String Theory 15”Colleen Sabo “Venice”Kristin Herzog “Jonquil”Colleen Sabo “Splendor of Autumn”Kristin Herzog “String Theory XXlV”

These two artist are really pushing the envelope of watercolor as an expressive medium without using alot of the technical tricks, just old fashioned expressive brushwork and creative use of color.  Bravo.  Steve
