Today’s painting is a nice winter scene that is much more colorful in real life.  The lighting was slightly off but I still think it works pretty well.  The palette is pretty limited basically ultramarine blue and burnt sienna.  I have added some raw sienna and cobalt violet but basically it is just two.

before the sky wash dries begin to rough brush in the background hills and trees remembering to lift the light off of the buildings and lifting a piece of light for the smoke.  I used a damp paper towel for the smoke and a damp flat brush for the roofs.  I lied I used a little cadmium scarlet grayed with ultramarine blue for the houses and added some cobalt violet for the wings of the house.

Paint the trees with a round brush charged with a cool gray mixed with ultramarine blue and burnt sienna, work on getting texture and variety of value on the edges.  keep the windows, doors and details a middle value because if they get too dark they will take over the buildings, like a cartoon.
