The Artist In The Studio

In January I started this 90 paintings in 90 days with a version of this painting and I really just slapped the painting together.  I hadn’t painted a watercolor in my studio for a while and I was really uncomfortable with everything painting space, too much water, lights, camera just about everything.  I really didn’t know what I was getting into but now at the 90th painting I am so thankful for the opportunity to share this with everyone who has been keeping up with me.  Thank you so much and it has been my pleasure to do this project.  I decided to end the series with a new version of the first blog entry and I am not sure it is better but I was more comfortable with the studio, and all of the necessary accoutrements. Tomorrow I will begin a new project so check back I am not sure exactly what will be going on but I know there are many out there who want more and I will happily oblige.  Wet the paper with a natural sponge and remove the excess water to control the amount of water on the surface.  Run a wash of Raw Sienna over the sky leaving some areas of white paper for the feeling of glare.  Brush in mixtures of cobalt blue, cobalt violet and burnt sienna for the clouds.  Keep varying the colors.
Lift some lights out of the sky with a damp paper towel and then paint the water with a varied mixture of cobalt violet, blue, burnt sienna and a hint of olive green.  Run a dark piece on the bottom just after the paint sets up but don’t wait for it to dry a bleed is better than a hard edge.

Use a cool grey of cobalt blue, violet and burnt sienna for land masses and boats.  Be loose this is not a portrait of the dog.

Continue painting the boats and go back into the land mass with some darker accents.

Paint some water with a dark version of the cool grey and this little painting is done.  It should read dark versus light with a feeling of glisten and glare.
