The Artist In The Studio

Dibs, dabs and splotches that’s the ticket for this painting because it is all about small pieces of paint applied in creative ways, not big bold washes and wait till it dries.  The main idea behind all of these days of blogs was to get my followers to put the paint on the paper in more expressive ways and to stop looking at a photo as the bible no mistakes or variations allowed.  The palette in this painting is not much different from all of the previous paintings, raw sienna mixed with new gamboge for the light in the sky and then an immediate dropping in of cobalt violet, ultramarine blue and piece or two of burnt sienna and cadmium scarlet.  Vary your colors continually and the painting will be exciting even with pretty simple choices of colors.Run a wash of raw sienna, new gamboge leaving areas of white paper and then drop the violet blue greys on top creating clouds.add a little burnt sienna to the bluish grey and paint background trees cutting around the buildings and then pull a texture piece of burnt sienna and raw sienna diagonally across the foreground.Warm up the foreground with cadmium scarlet and burnt sienna greyed a little with burnt sienna, don’t forget to leave some lights for contrast.  Splatter some of whatever paint is on your mixing area.  Scrape some highlights on the rocks.Paint the buildings leaving the lights on the roofs, again remember to adjust your colors slightly every time you touch the paper.  This will pay dividends down the road in your paintings, variety will enliven your paintings.Put in a few finishing touches of darker accents and details.

  1. I am really liking the last few paintings. You really hit the zone – besides depressing me for not painting as much as I should! Thanks for doing this.

  2. Skyes and stones. Two very difficult issues in which you are helping me a lot. Thank you for explaining both detail and step by step. Respectfully
