The Artist In The Studio

This painting is about trying to create the distance and starkness of the midwest in winter, the cows add an element or perspective.  The repeats of the cow symbol go from fairly detailed to just a repeat a dark color in the impression of the animal.  The colors are very subdued and greyed.  Leave white paper for the snow and put lots of texture in the foreground.A varied blue wash of cerulean, cobalt and ultramarine blue for the sky with pieces of light for interest and focus.  Raw sienna with a touch of cobalt blue starts the distant hill.Work the greyed raw sienna down to the bottom leave textural lights for suggestions of snow, and splatter some texture on the wash areas and the white patches.Paint some dark details along the ridge line and paint in some fine detail lines for the close weeds in the front.More details and then the suggestion of the cows, try not to be too literal for the cows.  If you get the front ones to work and be believable the viewer will accept all the other little marks as absolutely cows.detail of the cows.

  1. This is a favorite site for me
Every week I love to see projects
In water colors and land scapes.

  2. I love the simplicity with which you have explained this. The depth and perspective you’ve got is great. And I’ve learned how to suggest cows without putting even their horns. Thank you once again Steve.
