The Artist In The Studio

In this painting I tried to really get that sun filled late afternoon quality that has colorful shadows and glistening water.  Let the colors of the sky merge on the paper, cobalt blue, ultramarine blue, cobalt violet, burnt sienna, and a light wash of raw sienna at the horizon.  The sky sets the tone for the painting, remember to protect the light on the buildings I lifted the lights after I ran the sky wash, of course I tried to not paint too much on the white places during the first wash.

The foreground is a combination of raw sienna, cobalt violet, burnt sienna, olive green and alizirin crimson most of the colors are only partially mixed on the palette  and then allowed to merge on the paper.  Put a little strong pigment on the upper edge of the land mass.

Scrape the rocks and paint the trees, pulling the trees in front of the buildings to create some depth.  I used Olive green and cobalt blue for the base green color and then added burnt sienna, and ultramarine blue for variety in color and value.

Shadows are a light wash of cobalt violet, cobalt blue, and burnt sienna with hints of raw sienna for the feeling of reflected light.  Add some almost pure burnt sienna to the wet shadows for the doors and windows, just a suggestion is all that is needed.Details and figures and the painting is finished.  What a difference a day makes, today I have a plan some clarity in my head and I think the result is much more interesting and focused.  Thank you for following along.  DON’T FORGET TO SIGN UP FOR MAINE AND SPAIN, YOU WILL BE SORRY IF YOU MISS THE WORKSHOPS THEY WILL BE WONDERFUL.
