The Artist In The Studio

Early morning light filtering through the trees, and long reflections in the calm water.

The sky is a wash of cerulean blue with hints of cobalt violet, with a splash of raw sienna along the tree line.  The background trees are a light valued wash of cerulean blue with some warm grays mixed with burnt sienna and cobalt blue.

Paint in the trees, with a round brush, painting with the side of the brush, paint in a wash of new gamboge, raw sienna and olive green

Scrape the tree trunks and rocks with a knife blade.

Paint the water reflections by first running a few pieces of water along the bottom and floating in some of the tree and rock colors.  Keep this part of the painting really loose and leave pieces of the sky showing through.

With a small round brush put in some rough texture on the trees, field and cows.  I used a mixture of raw sienna, burnt sienna, and ultramarine blue for these details.

  1. Thank you for your marvelous instructions to paint this scene, especially the reflections in the water and the cows.
