Keep the light in this painting subdued.  Start with a light valued sky of cobalt blue, cobalt violet and raw sienna merging the colors on the damp paper.  The sky will set the tone for the painting.

After you drop the sky in with a round brush, paint the foreground using raw sienna, cobalt violet, olive green and new gamboge, paint the movement of the field not the details of a field.  Make sure you leave the buildings light.

Continuing with the round brush, create a mixture of cobalt blue, olive green, burnt sienna and cobalt violet and brush in the poplar trees.  Let the sky show through and leave some light at the bottom of the trees.

Brush in some cobalt behind the houses to push them forward, and drag a brush with some darker mixes along the road.Paint a little olive green into the cobalt blue behind the house, this will give some more dimension to this area.  While the trees are still damp scrape out some highlights for the tree trunks.

detail of the house, I used a mix of cobalt violet, raw sienna and cobalt blue for the house.  Remember to leave light around the houses.

    • I once lived on the bay in Matthews County VA and it was flat, water table high, and the lanes were long with filtered light. This was my idea.
