The Artist In The Studio

In this painting I used a 1.5 inch flat and really tried to get the movement and power of the surf coming over top of the rocks, it is a fairly straightforward painting top to bottom, a few scrapes, and some strong value pieces.  I used cobalt and cerulean blue for the sky leaving lots of white for the surf and I cleaned up the edges of the surf with a damp paper towel.

Add a little cobalt violet in the lower part of the sky to give a little more pop just above the surf.

With a really aggressive brush paint in the rocks using burnt and raw sienna mixed with some ultramarine blue and the occasional alizirin crimson, get some nice texture on the edges of the rock and then scrape the highlights on the rocks with a scraping tool.

scrape the highlights and drag the scraper out into the white paper and across the tops of the rocks to give a little variety and movement.

PPaint in the water with a round brush with a mixture of cobalt violet and a bluish grey tone, really speed the brush across the paper to give the marks power.

Detail, notice the splattered yellows up in the surf it really says power. Waves pick up seaweed as they crash into the rocks.Detail, texture at the bottom of the rocks says movement.
