In the Studio: Painting 28 Almost Day 28 “Lines, Splatters, Color”

The Artist In The Studio

Okay so this will look like a really disconnected mess of marks, lines and splatters but if you really think about it sometimes you just need to practice your brushwork and application of paint.  There are days when the ideas just don’t come around knocking on the door, but you have a commitment to yourself to paint 90 paintings in 90 days.  I never said they all were headed to or intended for the next major art competition.  This type of exercise will pay great dividends it you lighten up on yourself and give it a try.

On damp paper splatter some red,  yellow and green then with a thin liner  brush push and pull some expressive lines across the paper, save some white paper

I brushed in some big pieces of cobalt blue and new gamboge to establish some form and continued making some interesting and varied lines.

I keep adding greens, reds and blues in both line and form trying to get some movement and sense of representation.  I can see that it is not going to be a great piece of work but I am going to stick with it.

I put in some details of weeds water, trees, and landscape abstract symbols.  I am just staying loose and really having a good time.  The freedom comes from trying to get a little knowledge and comfort with the process and not worrying about the product.

  1. It seems easy and fun, but not so much. It takes much practice to paint without fear and without care. I’m going to try to
