The Artist In The Studio

This little painting is about working out some brushwork and trying to create interesting focal points all over the painting.  I have some figures, some boats, some white paper, some okay brushwork and a fairly quick application of paint. Again we are still in the warming up mode so keep your ego outside of the studio and just paint.  I am really trying to follow my own advice and not get too concerned with the details and the sophistication.  I can paint but right now I am trying to give everyone good direction.  15 x 22 arches cold pressed paper

First wash of cerulean blue, and new gamboge, cut around the sails.

Bring in the tree, weeds and rocks with new gamboge, raw sienna, burnt sienna, and ultramarine blue

Figures and light filled rocks painted with thioviolet, burnt sienna, and cobalt blue, finish with some light scrapes on the rocks.

Put in dark accents, and finishing details don’t get overly busy.

details of sail boats, keep them loose

figure details, again loose and lively.  Have fun paint everyday and good things will happen.  Don’t worry about complexity or sophistication, just paint.

  1. A rich and interesting painting, with great energy and vitality. Very helpful to me. Your sequence of images makes it possible for me to see how the painting developed. I am reminded of Dufy. Your upbeat and exuberant style gives immediate pleasure to the viewer.. Thanks very much.

  2. Hello, I love your tuition and follow the lessons every day. I wake up on the other side of the world and wonder what wonderful snippet of watercolour painting I am going to learn today.

    Thank you so much Steve.

    Cheers from Australia.

  3. I LOVE seeing how this picture grew, Steve…light and lively! It is truly inspiring…and when we see you next, you can explain “gamboge”…Bunty
