Demonstration: Figure on Toned Paper

• Lessons Step-by-Step

This demonstration is pretty straight forward in that I tone the paper with a mixture of Raw Sienna, Cadmium Scarlet, and Skip’s Green to get an interesting ground that will be dark enough to work against the selective spots of color and the opaque white paint, Titanium White watercolor pigment.  I draw the image with a 6B pencil and really try to make it expressive, I am not real thrilled with the drawing but I felt the approach was worth demonstrating even if it wasn’t the perfect drawing.  Let the ground colors dry or speed up the drying with a hair dryer before you draw the image.  18 x 24 cold press paperI used Cadmium Scarlet and Raw Sienna to get some form to the face and used Cerulean Blue to cut out the shoulder

Using white paint without much water I highlighted around the face and hair and right shoulder.  I also went back and redrew the lines on the figure to get a little more tension and definition.
