Creative Jumpstarts: Simplifying a Complicated Subject

Jumpstarts
Watercolors

In this exercise I want you to look a very complicated subject and really reduce it down to a very expressive light filled composition.  Leave out all of the details and just amplify the light.  Really think about what is necessary and what can be eliminated.  I think you will see from the photo that I am really making a lot of this up.  I have reduced the drawing down to a very austere and basic building and just made sure that the light is the total story.

18 x 24 watercolor on Arches Block.  Main colors Skips Green, New Gamboge, Cobalt Violet, Cobalt Blue

  1. I’m watching your old posts. They are so interesting to me like that are the currently publishing. This one found me very valuable to learn how to interpret the basics of a photograph for reference. Few schools of art, focus on this issue. A million thanks for sharing your knowledge.
